Program Description:

This full-time online degree-completion (2+2) program, leading to the Bachelor of Science in Business Education with teacher licensure in grades 6-12, offers courses designed for students who seek skills and knowledge in business foundations that can be applied to classroom instruction or corporate training. Students must develop competencies in classroom management, subject matter knowledge, evaluation and assessment, learning psychology and teaching methodology. Students also develop the ability to foster learning development through logical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving. Students will complete their advanced training through a second area concentration in Computer Information Systems. This program will produce exceptional teachers and trainers prepared and ready for leadership responsibilities in a technologically-oriented, diverse, dynamic, and global learning environment.

Information Unique to Distance Education Program Admission and Enrollment:

The Business Education program will deliver upper-division coursework entirely online to a cohort of 20-25 students - primarily to those who have completed, or are close to completing, required coursework through a college transfer program (or equivalent lower-division coursework). During five regular semesters (2.5 academic years) including summers, Appalachian faculty will deliver approximately 75 semester hours (fulltime) of program courses in areas such as education foundations, business education methods, business education content courses and a second academic concentration in computer information systems. Twelve of the delivered hours are devoted to the final semester student teaching experience.

Admission Requirements:

Application for Admission: The application for admission must be complete (online application submitted, the fee paid, and all required supporting documents received) and ready for review by the applicable deadline. Please continue to log into your application to check for missing items until you receive notice that you have been admitted to Appalachian State University.

Since this is a transfer program, no test scores (ACT or SAT) are required for admission.

  • Step 2:   Admission to cohort:

In addition to meeting the University's Admission requirements (re: Step 1), to enter this distance education transfer program, students must also meet the cohort entry requirement: a minimum of 30 transfer hours are required to begin the cohort program. To determine if your coursework transfers to Appalachian, please visit the transfer equivalency screen.

Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date the application and all supporting documents (which reflect the applicant is admissible) are received; however, priority consideration for admission will be offered an applicant who applies by the cohort application deadline and has successfully completed PRAXIS I, have completed the NC Community College 44-Hour Core, a NC Associate of Arts, or a NC Associate of Science degree.

Program Requirements:

Appalachian will provide the upper division coursework required for the Business Education major entirely online. For an outline of the Business Education program of study click here.

Admission to Teacher Education: After a student begins the off-campus program, s/he must meet the requirements for admission to teacher education. Admission to teacher education is required by the end of the second semester in the program. Click here for Teacher Education Admission Requirements.

Additional Requirements: In addition to the courses delivered by Appalachian, the following courses must be completed before the last semester of the program (before student teaching). North Carolina Community College course numbers are listed in parenthesis:

  • Principles of Marketing (MKT 120)
  • Accounting I, ACC 2100 (ACC 120)
  • Accounting II, ACC 2110 (ACC 121)
  • MicroEconomics, ECO 2030 (ECO 251)
  • Legal Environments of Business, LAW 2150 (BUS 115)

Although not required for admission to the cohort, individuals planning to enter this program are strongly encouraged to complete the NC 44 hour (CAA)/transfer core, AA or AS degree through a NC community college prior to enrollment in this program. Completion of one of these three options will automatically complete Appalachian's general education requirement. Note: students who begin the cohort program without having the NC 44-hour transfer core or AA or AS degree complete, will need to complete it prior to the last semester in the program.

Student Teaching: Student Teaching is completed during the last semester of the program, is full-time in a classroom setting, and must be completed in North Carolina.
