Program Description:

The BS in Communication prepares those interested in entering specific communication professions. The concentration in Advertising is designed to prepare students for careers in advertising agencies, the media, marketing or in-house advertising departments of organizations, or non-profit or political communications. Students learn skills used in both creative and business aspects of the advertising profession. They take courses in copywriting for print and broadcast, print ad computer layout and design, broadcast production, media planning and sales, consumer behavior and strategic advertising campaign development, as well as communication courses in public speaking and persuasion. In addition, students learn about the history of advertising, laws and regulations affecting advertising, and social and ethical issues of advertising which affect society. Students also earn a minor in Business, Health Promotion, Criminal Justice or Psychology.

Information Unique to Distance Education Program Admission and Enrollment:

The online BS-Communication program will deliver upper-division coursework entirely online to a group of 20-25 students - primarily to those who have completed, or are close to completing, required coursework through a college transfer program (or equivalent lower-division coursework).   During four semesters (2 academic years) not including summers, Appalachian faculty will deliver approximately 57 semester hours (full-time) of program courses in areas such as communication, media, and advertising, and minor courses in either business, health promotion, criminal justice, or psychology.  A minor is required for the major; business and health promotion are online; face-to-face psychology or criminal minors are also available (see minor requirements below).

Admission Requirements:

Application for Admission: The application for admission must be complete (online application submitted, the fee paid, and all required supporting documents received) and ready for review by the applicable deadline. Please continue to log into your application to check for missing items until you receive notice that you have been admitted to Appalachian State University.

Since this is a transfer program, no test scores (ACT or SAT) are required for admission.

  • Step 2:   Admission to cohort (group):

In addition to meeting the University's Admission requirements (re: Step 1), to enter this distance education transfer program, students must also meet the cohort entry requirement: a minimum of 50 transfer hours are required to begin the cohort program. To determine if your coursework transfers to Appalachian, please visit the transfer equivalency screen.

Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date the application and all supporting documents (which reflect the applicant is admissible) are received; however, priority consideration for admission will be offered an applicant who applies by the appropriate deadline and has successfully completed the NC Community College 44-Hour Core, a NC Associate of Arts, or a NC Associate of Science degree.
