The Department of Curriculum and Instruction exists to prepare students to assume positions as professionals in both school and non-school settings (traditional and non-traditional). In addition, the department seeks to develop competence for those who choose to become curriculum specialists, and media specialists, and to provide a well-balanced program of academic and field experiences and strives to provide quality professional service to the region, state and nation. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction maintains a basic philosophy which centers on the commitment to rigorous preparation for pre-service and in-service teachers who will provide significant contributions to the field of education. Faculty and students come together as a community of learners who inquire about and examine the nature of teaching, education, and learning. Teachers must have the ability and commitment to solve problems, make effective decisions, use emerging technologies, and develop alternative strategies for culturally diverse and exceptional students to meet the demands of the 21st century.

Information Unique to Distance Education Program Admission and Enrollment
The Elementary Education full-time, daytime, seated program accepts a maximum of 25 admitted students into new cohort opportunities; they are proposed to begin each fall semester. Courses are sequenced to take into account pre- and co-requisites. Appalachian faculty deliver typically 4-5 courses/semester (scheduled in 2- to 3-hour blocks), spring and fall (no summer courses). 61 hours of upper-division courses and 12 hours of student teaching requires 5 semesters (2.5 years). Students attend classes at the Appalachian Center-Caldwell, Hudson, which is equipped with a computer lab and wireless internet for student use.
Before entry, it's recommended that applicants complete Appalachian's General Education requirement - with a North Carolina Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree, including Expository Writing R C 1000 (ENG 111 at a NC community college) and one of the following community college math courses: MAT140, 143, 161, 165, 171, 172, 175, 263, 271, or 272. If completion of one of the transfer core options is not likely by entry, contact the program manager for options. Students who begin the cohort program without having the NC AA or NC AS degree complete, will need to complete it prior to the last semester of coursework. Please note: the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree does not typically meet the core requirement.
- Step 1: Admission to the University: Appalachian State’s Undergraduate Transfer Admission Requirements
Application for Admission: The application for admission must be complete (online application submitted, the fee paid, and all required supporting documents received) and ready for review by the applicable deadline. Please continue to log into your application to check for missing items until you receive notice that you have been admitted to Appalachian State University.
Since this is a transfer program, no test scores (ACT or SAT) are required for admission.
- Step 2: Admission to cohort:
In addition to meeting the University's Admission requirements (re: Step 1), to enter this distance education transfer program, students must also meet the cohort entry requirement: a minimum of 30 transfer hours, Expository Writing R C 1000 (ENG 111 at a NC community college) and a college transferable math (some NC community college options are: MAT140, 143, 161, 165, 171, 172, 175, 263, 271, or 272). To determine if your coursework transfers to Appalachian, please visit the transfer equivalency screen.
Applicants will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date the application and all supporting documents (which reflect the applicant is admissible) are received; however, priority consideration for admission will be offered an applicant who applies by the cohort application deadline, has successfully completed PRAXIS I, and have completed a NC Associate of Arts, or a NC Associate of Science degree.

Admission to Teacher Education: After a student begins the off-campus program, s/he must meet the requirements for admission to teacher education. Admission to teacher education is required by the end of the first semester in the program. Click here for Teacher Education Admission Requirements.
Additional Requirements: In addition to the courses delivered by Appalachian, students must complete a Second Academic Concentrations (SAC) for Elementary Education licensure. For distance education students attending a NC community college we highly recommend the Second Academic Concentration in Social Studies. Student Teaching: Student Teaching is completed during the last semester of the program, is full-time in a classroom setting, and must be completed in North Carolina.

Appalachian State University reserves the right to cancel the start of any Distance Education program due to the lack of sufficient, sustainable enrollment (typically 15 for Graduate programs and 18 for Undergraduate programs). In the event of a cancellation for insufficient enrollment, application fees will be refunded. Refunds will also be issued for any tuition and fees paid by applicants. These refund policies apply ONLY to canceled programs. When program starts are delayed, students may opt for a refund or apply their application to the new semester.
